Which is the proper path for us to follow?

Q: Which is the proper path for us to follow?

A: When you speak of a path, where are you now? and where do you want to go ? If these are known, then we can talk of the path. Know first where you are and what you are. There is nothing to be reached. You are always as you really are. But you don’t realise it. That is all.

~ Sri Ramana Maharshi, Day by Day with Bhagavan book

The guru perceives no difference between himself and others

“The Guru is he who, at all times, remains in the innermost depths of the Self. He perceives no difference between himself and others, and is totally free from the idea that he is the ‘Enlightened’ or ‘Liberated’ one, while those around him are in bondage or in the darkness of ignorance. His inner serenity is unshakable under any circumstances; he never allows himself to be disturbed.”

~ Ramana Maharshi

All are Jnanis

“The Guru or Jnani (the Enlightened One) perceives no difference between himself and others. For him, all are Jnanis, all are one with him; therefore, how could a Jnani claim that such or such a person is his disciple? However, one who is not liberated perceives multiplicity and sees others as beings distinct from himself; for that person, the relationship between Guru and disciple is a reality.”

~ Ramana Maharshi

The guru simply helps you eradicate ignorance

To someone seeking the touch and grace of the Maharshi:

M: The “I am” is the Atman; the Atman is the guru, and the Atman is also grace. No one is without the Atman. One is always in contact with it; nothing is more intimate. Granting grace is not a special function of God, nor is there a particular time or occasion in which He is merciful, nor occasions in which He is not.

Q: Do I have your grace and your blessing?

M: Why should you doubt it?

Q: Is grace necessary?

M: Certainly. But grace is present at all times. It is the Self and cannot be acquired.

Q: Is not grace more effective than practice?

M: The guru simply helps you eradicate ignorance.

Meditation on the heartcentre

Of course there is also the practice of meditation on the heartcentre.
It is only a practice and not investigation.

Only the one who meditates on the heart can remain aware when the mind ceases to be active and remains still;
whereas those who meditate on other centres cannot be so aware but infer that the mind was still only after it becomes again active.
