Mathur Mohan was a rich manager of the Dakshineswar estate. He was deeply devoted to Sri Ramakrishna, but sometimes struggled with ego regarding his wealth and influence. One day, while walking in the temple garden, Mathur thought to himself: “Everything in this temple runs because of my wealth and management”.
Sri Ramakrishna, sensing his thought, walked up to Mathur, pointed to the sky and said:
“Look at those clouds gathering! Who is driving them? Look at the waves on the Ganga—who is pushing them? The Mother manages the whole universe. If you stop spending money here, She will find thousands of others to maintain Her temple”
Mathur bowed down, instantly realizing the pettiness of his pride.
